New Study Combines Education Stats With Personal Stories From Arkansas Women

All this week, the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas, a statewide philanthropic organization, is hosting a series of activities to mark its major annual fundraising event.

The Power of the Purse luncheons in Central and Northwest Arkansas honor women’s accomplishments and raise money for programs that are improving the lives of women and girls in the state. The final event is Friday in Little Rock.

Report Places Arkansas at Risk for Effects From Wildfire Smoke

Arkansas has been ranked 11th in the nation for health risks associated with wildfire smoke and debris, according to new data from the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The nonprofit released a report Thursday showing areas where environmental effects from wildfires have been a problem in recent years. While the wildfire season is over for most of the country, figures place more than 900,000 people in north and north-central Arkansas at risk for a number of health problems, including respiratory infections, cancers and related lung conditions.

Little Rock Museums Host Big Boo Bash Thursday Night

The 18th annual Big Boo-seum Bash will take place Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It's being hosted by the Greater Little Rock Museum Consortium and hosted by the Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau.

There will be games, story-telling, candy, and fun. The event will be held at nine different museums in Little Rock.

Funeral Set For Arkansas Teenager, Believed To Die From Rare Mosquito Infection

Memorial services are set for Friday for a southwest Arkansas teenager whose death may have been caused by a rare infection spread by mosquitoes.

Family members say 13-year-old Coleman Pearson was diagnosed earlier this month with eastern equine encephalitis. He died Tuesday at Arkansas Children's Hospital.

The diagnosis has not yet been confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.

Arkansas AG Rejects Wording Of Political Spending Item

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has rejected the wording of a proposed ballot measure aimed at limiting corporate spending to influence elections in Arkansas.

McDaniel rejected the proposal's wording on Wednesday, citing what he said were ambiguities and deficiencies in the proposed ballot title and text. 

McDaniel has to certify the wording of a proposed measure before groups can begin gathering signatures needed to qualify for a spot on the ballot.

The proposal that McDaniel rejected on Wednesday comes from the Regnat Populus Ballot Question Committee.

Little Rock Technology Park Board Votes Downtown Site As Top Choice

Members of the Little Rock Technology Park Authority board discuss their top choice for the location of the tech park.

A site in downtown Little Rock is the choice for the location of a new technology park. 

The Little Rock Technology Park Authority board voted 4-to-3 Wednesday afternoon to move ahead with looking at the downtown Little Rock area as its top choice for the tech park.

The other two sites that had been under consideration were a site at UALR and the Sears Building at I-630 and University Avenue.

Arkansas School Bus Driver Honored For Heroism After Hijacking

School and City Officials honor School Bus Driver Sheila Hart, parent Karlena Lipari and Law Enforcement officers for bringing last Thursday's bus hijackings to a peaceful end.

Officials with the Pulaski County Special School District gathered Wednesday afternoon to honor the school bus driver who “did everything right” after her bus was hijacked by a knife-wielding man in Jacksonville late last Thursday.

District Superintendent Jerry Guess, the Mayor of Jacksonville Gary Fletcher, law enforcement officers and parents were on hand to praise the efforts of 51-year old Sheila Hart, who says she first thought the hijacker, 22-year old Nicholas John Miller, was a parent when he first approached her bus.

Arkansas Poll: State Continues To Lean Republican

Results from a new survey of Arkansas residents show people are concerned about ongoing economic instability. 

Analysts at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville say the 2013 Arkansas Poll reveals only 63 percent of respondents feel the state is headed in the right direction, a result that is 10 points lower than last year. 

The findings released Wednesday also underscore ways the political climate is shifting in the state.

Bryant Council To Discuss Police Chief's Travel Expenses At Strip Club

City councilors in Bryant are examining the travel expenses of the town's police chief and a school resource officer after the pair was reimbursed for steak dinners from an upscale Orlando, Fla., strip club.

According to travel receipts obtained by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Police Chief Mark Kizer and Bryant High School resource officer Lee Ledbetter both submitted receipts in July from O.C. Food & Beverage LLC Steakhouse.

The newspaper reports the address and telephone number for the steakhouse belongs to Rachel's Adult Entertainment & Steakhouse.
