Federal Aid To Help Clean Up Winter Weather Damage

Governor Mike Beebe is seeking a federal disaster declaration that would make 15 Arkansas counties eligible for federal aid to help area recover from wintry weather earlier this month.  Beebe says he's seeking a major disaster declaration for Crawford, Franklin, Independence, Johnson, Logan, Madison, Marion, Montgomery, Newton, Polk, Scott, Searcy, Sebastian, Sharp, and Van Buren counties.

Amnesty Period for Misdemeaner Warrants, Overdue Fines in Little Rock

Little Rock District Criminal Court is running a temporary amnesty program for people with overdue fines and court costs, as well as failure to appear warrants. Natalie Short, a Senior Probation Officer, said the program is for non-violent offenders.

“These are misdemeanor cases that have already been adjudicated and already been fined out, or given some type of sentence. People have either fallen behind or not made payments as agreed,” said Short. She said the city believes this policy encourages people to come forward.

Little Rock's Airport Expects To See Decline In Passengers This Holiday Season

Passenger traffic at Little Rock’s Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport is expected to be down about five percent this holiday season compared to last year.

The Transportation Security Administration estimates 40,663 people will fly out of the airport between Friday and January 1.  The busiest day is expected to be Saturday, Dec. 21, when nearly 4,000 people will be departing.

"Traffic is already picking up," airport Spokesman Shane Carter said Friday, "but as we move through the next few days, of course Christmas will be busy for us."

Arkansas Lawmakers Approve Insurance Exchange Funds

Arkansas lawmakers have narrowly approved federal funding to continue operating the insurance marketplace under the federal health care law, despite objections from some Republican legislators over the overhaul's rocky start.

The Arkansas Legislative Council on Friday approved the $10.6 million grant for the insurance exchange. The insurance exchange is an online marketplace set up under the federal law where consumers can shop for policies. The panel approved the grant on a 21-18 vote.

Church Leaders Give Christmas Help To Gun Victims, Preach Stronger Laws

A group called “Arkansan Pastors for Gun Sense” is partnering with law enforcement agencies around the state to reach out to families of victims of gun violence by delivering toys and Christmas hams  Saturday. In addition to supporting victims, the group has been pushing for legislation to strengthen background checks and other gun trafficking laws.

Arkansas' Unemployment Rate Stays At 7.5 Percent

State officials say Arkansas' unemployment rate stayed at 7.5 percent in November.

The Arkansas Department of Workforce Services said Friday that the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained stable at 7.5 percent between October and November.

The national jobless rate, meanwhile, declined three-tenths of a percentage point, from 7.3 percent in October to 7.0 percent in November.

Officials with Arkansas State University announced Thursday their fifth head football coach in five years. Blake Anderson most recently served as offensive coordinator for North Carolina where his team earned school records in offensive categories. At a press conference Anderson stressed his aggressive style.

Former President Clinton Touts Health Initiative In Little Rock

Former President Bill Clinton says business leaders can work with the health care industry to promote a healthier culture for people in central Arkansas.

Clinton was joined by University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Chancellor Dan Rahn and business leaders at a forum on how it will take cultural changes to bring about better health.

The former president likened getting people change to healthy eating and shed unhealthy habits to trying to turn the Titanic around.
