Freeze Warning Issued For Most Of Arkansas

Forecasters say chilly weather is headed to Arkansas early this week, but the cold isn't expected to stick around.

The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for much of Arkansas with a hard freeze warning in place for the northwestern counties.

Forecasters say the coldest temperatures of the season are expected, putting an end to the growing season for most areas.

Winter Weather Awareness Week In Arkansas

Governor Mike Beebe had proclaimed this week as Winter Weather Awareness Week across Arkansas.

The state Department of Emergency Management is encouraging residents to prepare themselves for wintry weather that can include snow and ice.

Bottled water and foods that don't need to be heated or refrigerated should be kept in homes. Automobiles should be winterized and residents are advised to put in their vehicles items such as blankets, flash lights, water, food and a first aid kit.

Testing To Close Lanes On I-40/I-430 In Metro Little Rock

The Arkansas highway department says there are lane closures coming on Interstates 40 and 430 in the Little Rock metropolitan area.

Crews are preparing for the next phase of a construction project to widen I-40 between Conway and North Little Rock. The work was to have been done last week but was postponed by rainy weather.

The northbound inside lane of I-430 near the I-40 interchange will be closed on Monday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Veterans Day Activities in Central Arkansas

There are a number of events being hosted Monday in Central Arkansas in observance of Veterans Day.

Those wishing to publicly acknowledge the service of veterans have a range of of activities choose from starting at 11 a.m. Governor Mike Beebe will be speaking in Little Rock's River Market district in conjunction with the 106th Army Band. At the same time in Cabot Representative Rick Crawford will be at an American Legion sponsored ceremony.

Damien Echols Returns to Arkansas to Speak at UCA

It’s been over two years since Damien Echols, of the West Memphis Three, was released from prison and he’s making a rare trip back to Arkansas Monday to speak at UCA. Echols and his wife Lorri are traveling from their home in Massachusetts as part of the university’s Artist-in-Residence Series to discuss two books he has authored.

Legislative Audit Committee Approves Check Of Arkansas' New Private Option

The Legislative Joint Auditing Committee went back and forth Friday morning about why they are requesting the Division of Legislative Audit to complete a special report on the state's very new private option Medicaid expansion plan.

The state’s Division of Legislative Audit will conduct a special report for lawmakers to assess the early days of enrollment into Arkansas’s Private Option Medicaid expansion plan.

The Legislative Joint Auditing Committee approved the special report Friday.

Supporters of the Private Option, including Representative Reginald Murdoch, asked whether the audit report of such a new program was meant to hamper its implementation.

Exhibit From Famed Alfred Stieglitz Collection Opens At NW Arkansas Museum

This weekend an exhibit from the collection of noted early 20th century photographer and art collector Alfred Stieglitz opens to the public at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville.

The highly anticipated showing comes after a protracted legal battle involving the Attorney General of Tennessee, who argued that the collection should stay in his state.

Stieglitz’s wife Georgia O’Keeffe donated the collection to the historic African American college Fisk University in 1949 with the stipulation that it could never be sold.

Arkansas Steel Mill Appeal Hearing Tentatively Set For March

An administrative law judge has tentatively scheduled a March 28 hearing on the appeal of an air permit issued for a planned $1 billion steel mill in Mississippi County.

Nucor Steel, which has two steel plants in Mississippi County, is appealing the air permit issued to Big River Steel. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the March hearing means construction will begin later than planned on the new steel mill.

The plant's investors had hoped to begin construction in December.
