Arkansas Attorney General: Laws Help Consumers During Winter Storm

Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says Gov. Mike Beebe's declaration of a state of emergency because of winter storms crossing the state has triggered state laws intended to protect consumers during an emergency.

McDaniel says Thursday's declaration triggers a state law that prohibits businesses from raising prices more than 10 percent, with certain exceptions. Businesses may exceed the 10-percent cap if they can establish that the higher price is directly related to added expenses such as costs imposed by a supplier or because of higher labor and materials costs.

Christmas In The Quarter

UPDATE: This event has been canceled due to the effects of inclement winter weather.

The Quapaw United Methodist Church is hosting its 10th annual Christmas in the Quarter Fundraising Event Sunday from 2:00 to 5 :00 in the afternoon. 

Each year those attending can tour historic homes through downtown Little Rock, by walking or taking the trolley. Associate Pastor Anne Thompson says refreshments are provided and the money raised supports church programs.

Ice, sleet, and snow have been affecting roadways in the state but so far there have not been any major accidents, delays, or closings.

David Nillis with the Highway Department said, “There have been some fender benders out there, nothing that has blocked any of the major arteries or that is blocking the travel lanes. We just encourage people to drive slowly and keep plenty of distance between you and the vehicle and front. Overall, we’ve had a pretty, pretty good day on the roadways.”

Arkansas Sees Sleet, Slush and Snow

Sleet, freezing rain and snow fell across Arkansas Friday, leading to slippery and slushy roadways and power outages in many areas. The National Weather Service says temperature will continue to drop and the likelihood for more icy precipitation will linger into the weekend.

“We will see low temperatures [Friday night] in the central Arkansas area between 10 and 17 degrees,” says NWS Meteorologist Jeff Hood.

More Than 37,000 Without Power In Arkansas

More than 37,000 homes and businesses are without electricity as a wintry storm hits the state.

Arkansas Valley Electric Cooperative of Ozark reported about 12,000 outages Friday morning, while SWEPCO had more than 11,000 outages in northwest Arkansas in Sebastian, Polk, Scott and Logan counties. Oklahoma Gas and Electric reported an additional 2,000 outages in Fort Smith, 1,200 outages in Charleston and more than 1,100 in Lavaca.

Flights Canceled At Arkansas Airports During Storm

Freezing rain, sleet and snow are forcing the cancelations of several flights at Arkansas airports. 

A dozen flights were canceled Friday morning at the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport in Little Rock, while six flights were canceled at Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport in Highfill. 

Another five flights were canceled Friday at Fort Smith Regional Airport. Much of Arkansas is under an ice storm warning or winter storm warning Friday as a large storm system hits the state.

Central Arkansas Transit Will Run Today But Not Express Routes

The Central Arkansas Transit Authority (CATA) says normal bus routes will run today, as well as River Rail service, but not express routes.

Express Routes 19 Hensley Express, 25 Pinnacle Mountain Express, 26 Maumelle/Oak Grove Express, and 36 Jacksonville/Sherwood Express have been canceled.
