A Hub Where Students And STEM Experts Can Meet

Organizers are hopeful that students, teachers and professionals in science, technology, engineering and math can soon use the resources that the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub offers.

Tuesday marked the start of the renovations, with a ceremony attended by Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, North Little Rock Mayor Joe Smith, local officials and students.

During the event, a wall was broken by a robot, formally beginning work to the center.

32 Apply For UA Lobbyist Position, Including Mark Darr

University of Arkansas officials are reviewing applications from 32 people for a lobbyist position that is to come open at the end of the fiscal year.

Among those applying is former Lt. Gov. Mark Darr, who resigned from office on Feb. 1 after being fined $11,000 for ethics violations.

On his application, Darr said he'd explain his reason for leaving "in (the) interview process."

Arkansas House Delays Vote On Medicaid Expansion

The House is delaying its fifth vote on whether to continue Arkansas' compromise Medicaid expansion.

House leaders on Tuesday scuttled plans for another vote that afternoon on whether to reauthorize the "private option" that was approved last year as an alternative to expanding Medicaid under the federal health care law.

Under the private option, Arkansas is using federal Medicaid funds to purchase private insurance for low-income residents.

Wintry Mix Forecast For Arkansas, But No Accumulation Expected

Spring hasn't quite made it to Arkansas yet. Forecasters say some parts of the state, including central Arkansas, could see light sleet and snow late Tuesday and early Wednesday.

The National Weather Service says southern parts of the state could see rain on Tuesday with a light wintry mix possible in central Arkansas.

Northern Arkansas could see light snow in the evening and overnight hours. But forecasters say little to no accumulation is expected with the storm system.

Moody Confirmed As Federal Judge For Eastern Arkansas

A circuit judge from Little Rock has won Senate confirmation to become a federal judge, but that comes with the complication of his father having to exit his post as a U.S. district judge.

The Senate voted 95-4 on Tuesday to confirm Judge James "Jay" Moody Jr. to preside in the Eastern District of Arkansas. His father, U.S. District Judge James Moody, announced earlier he'd retire if his son was confirmed.

The sitting judge's office said he was still on the bench as of Tuesday.

Inmate Again Escapes From Western Arkansas Jail

Authorities say an inmate at the Logan County jail has escaped the facility for the second time in less than four months.

The Logan County Sheriff's Office says 49-year-old Gary Patrick Topham was reported missing Tuesday morning from his cell at the county jail in Paris.

Topham last escaped the county jail in November by climbing over a chain-link fence. He was discovered three days later in Booneville.

Topham was being held on charges of failure to appear, fleeing, manufacturing methamphetamine or cocaine and possession of a controlled substance.

The Arkansas House of Representatives meets today. Lawmakers have lots of appropriation bills – which continue funding for various programs and agencies – awaiting their approval. They are all held up by the state's “private option,” its Medicaid expansion compromise.

Arkansas Lt. Governor Staff To Resign In June

Arkansas Senate President Michael Lamoureux says the four staff members in the lieutenant governor's office will resign in June after the position was left vacant following the resignation of former Lt. Gov. Mark Darr.

Lamoureux said Monday that the staff told him they will resign effective June 30 and that it was their idea to step aside. He says the employees are now searching for other jobs.
