Deadline Looming for Voter ID Comment

Tomorrow is the deadline for public comment regarding the new Voter ID law, according to the office of the Secretary of State.

The law, also known as Act 595, requires Arkansans to present a photo identification to election officials at the time of voting.  Despite being vetoed by Governor Mike Beebe, the law was put into effect earlier this year and has been met with controversy since its enactment.

New Photography Exhibit At The Laman Public Library

The Laman Public Library has a new photography exhibit for visitors. “Discover Greatness: An Illustrated History of the Negro Baseball Leagues” will be displayed until August 24th.

Dan Noble, spokesman for the library, says the exhibit features 90 photographs, some over 100 years old. He encourages people of all ages to come see them.

"It's just a great exhibit...people can just stop by on their lunch break or make a little afternoon out of it but I think the people of Arkansas would really be interested in seeing this," said Noble.

What Supreme Court's Ruling on Voting Rights Could Mean for Arkansas

U.S. Supreme Court

This week, the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a core part of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. 

It struck down the law's formula for determining which states must get federal approval before changing election rules.

KUAR's Karen Tricot Steward spoke with John DiPippa of the law school at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock for some analysis on what this decision means for Arkansas.

Bishop Welcomes News Hospital Won't Be Sold

Bishop Anthony Taylor of the Diocese of Little Rock says he pleased by news that an agreement to sell Mercy Hot Springs hospital to Capella Healthcare will not take place.

Taylor said Friday that Thursday's announcement that the purchase agreement between Mercy and Capella will expire without a sale is a "welcome" decision.

Franklin, Tenn.-based Capella and Chesterfield, Mo.-based Mercy Health announced in September plans to merge National Park Medical Center and Mercy Hot Springs.

Summer Program Offers Enrichment For Gifted And Talented

With school out for the summer, the Little Rock School District is continuing to provide opportunities for students to learn.

One such program took place at David O. Dodd Elementary, where the district’s Summer Enrichment Program held its closing ceremony Friday.

Now completing its third year, the seven day camp utilizes critical thinking and problem solving for third through fifth graders who are proficient or advanced in math and literacy.

This year the theme focused on the study of Native Americans found in Arkansas.

Nordex To Shutter Jonesboro Wind Turbine Plant

Nordex USA says it is shuttering its Jonesboro production facility that once promised to employ 750 workers.

The plant, which manufactured “nacelles” for large wind turbines said it will complete the orders in its pipeline and then shut the $40 million factory down. Nacelles house the engine and other key turbine components and sit high atop a wind turbine tower.

Founding Father's Document Displayed At Clinton Library

George Washington's copy of the U.S. Constitution will be on display at the Clinton Library from June 29 until July 12.

A copy of the U.S. Constitution belonging to former president George Washington will be on display starting Saturday, June 29 at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center in downtown Little Rock.

The document, a bound book taken from a private collection, is traveling nationwide and will be shown at all thirteen presidential libraries. It was previously displayed at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta and will continue to the recently completed George W. Bush Presidential Library located on the campus of Southern Methodist University.

Hospital Merger Talks Off In Hot Springs

Two health care companies have ended talks about the prospect of merging two Hot Springs hospitals.

Capella Healthcare of Franklin, Tennessee and Mercy Health of Chesterfield, Missouri said Thursday that talks are no longer taking place about merging National Park Medical Center and Mercy Hot Springs.

Arkansas Business reports reports that the talks had gone on for more than a year and would have brought the facilities under Capella's ownership.
