The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has added a former oil refinery site in Union County to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites.
The EPA says the MacMillan Ring-Free Oil site is near a residential neighborhood and a school in Norphlet. It was used as a crude-oil refinery and as a maker of lubrication and asphalt products from 1929 to 1987. The site has been abandoned since 2007.
The Arkansas Supreme Court is to decide whether to toss a sentence of life in prison without parole for a man who was apparently 17 years old when he played a role in a 1995 murder in West Memphis.
The court heard arguments Thursday in which a lawyer for Ulonzo Gordon said a 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling blocks Gordon from serving his full sentence because he was a juvenile at the time of the slaying.
During trial, prosecutors had a document showing Gordon was 18, but attorney Jeff Rosenzweig says Gordon's birth certificate shows he was 17.

The UA system announced Wednesday that state Sen. Johnny Key has been named the system's associate vice president for university relations. A spokesman said Key will be paid $130,000 in the new post. Ruth Anne Crawford, the mother of Republican U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford of Arkansas, has died from a pneumonia-like infection. She was 72.
Crawford spokesman Jonah Shumate said Wednesday the congressman's mother passed away on Tuesday morning. The congressman returned to Arkansas Tuesday after learning about her death, Shumate said.
Ruth Anne Crawford lived in Kennett, Missouri and a funeral was scheduled Friday at McDaniel Chapel, according to the McDaniel Funeral Home. In addition to the congressman, she's survived by her husband Don and two other sons.
