Great Arkansas Cleanup Starts This Weekend

The annual Great Arkansas Cleanup starts this weekend, and people from around the state will come together to clean up community areas.

The Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission is organizing volunteers from various groups, including boy scouts, girl scouts, neighborhood associations, and rotary clubs.

Over 800,000 pounds of litter was collected last year, with the help of over 11,000 volunteers from around the state.

Arkansas Officials To Mark National Recovery Month

The Arkansas Department of Human Services is holding an event to encourage people recovering from behavioral health issues to speak out.

The state is marking National Recovery Month on Friday with a news conference and celebration on the Clinton presidential library lawn in downtown Little Rock.

The event will include a governor's proclamation and stories of substance abuse and mental health recovery from those who are living it.

Prosecutor: 5 Sentenced In Arkansas Drug-trafficking Case

Federal prosecutors say five people have been sentenced to prison or probation following an investigation into a drug-trafficking organization that was distributing methamphetamine in the northwest Arkansas area.

Prosecutors say the five people sentenced this week were charged in an eight-count indictment filed in March.

Online court records show that all five pleaded guilty to various charges in April. Prosecutors say the charges follow an investigation into an organization involved in distributing large quantities of methamphetamine in northwest Arkansas.

Special Prosecutor Sought For Arkansas Sheriff

An Arkansas prosecutor has asked a judge to appoint a special prosecutor to explore the possibility of removing the sheriff of Saline County following his guilty plea to a public drunkenness charge.

Prosecuting Attorney Ken Casady made the request in a letter Thursday to Judge Robert Herzfeld.

Casady says ethical concerns and his previous working relationship with Sheriff Bruce Pennington had forced him to step aside from any removal proceeding.

Pennington pleaded guilty last month to resisting arrest and public intoxication.

Arvest Bank, Simmons First Bid For Metropolitan National Bank

In a surprise move, Bentonville-based Arvest Bank and Pine Bluff-based Simmons First National Corp. submitted bids to acquire Little Rock-based Metropolitan National Bank, whose parent company, Rogers Bancshares, Inc., is embroiled in a bankruptcy proceeding.

Talk Business Arkansas reports Arvest’s bid was announced in a legal notice in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for an undisclosed figure, while Simmons First disclosed a $16.9 million bid in a SEC filing.

War Memorial Anticipating Large Crowd For Razorback Game Tailgating

The Arkansas Razorbacks will play the Samford Bulldogs this Saturday at 6 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium. Thousands of Razorback fans will gather on the War Memorial Stadium to cheer them on and celebrate before the game. Marketing Director Danny-Joe Crawford says over 50 thousand people usually show up to tailgate. He says some people come a few days before game day and camp out in the park.

“We have RV’s that’s been there since Monday. They’re called ‘The Roadhogs’ and they travel to all the Arkansas games,” Crawford said.

Governor Beebe and Mayor Stodola Speak at Historic Building Dedication

The Historic Blass Department Store on Fourth and Main in Little Rock has been redeveloped and was formally dedicated Thursday. Governor Mike Beebe and Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola were speakers at the opening ceremony. The 22 million dollar Mann on Main project is part of the ongoing effort to revive the once-thriving area.

Arkansas Tops Food Insecurity Rankings

Arkansas ranks second in the percentage of people living with food insecurity according to a report released this week by the Department of Agriculture. It says nearly 20% of Arkansans don’t know where their next meal will come from and the state also ranks first in the category, “very low food security.”

Tyler Lindsey with the Arkansas Food Bank says they’re watching as Congress considers reducing funds for SNAP, commonly referred to as food stamps.
