Mexican Consulate Gives Grant To UAMS

The Mexican Consulate in Little Rock is giving a grant from the Mexican government to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Public Health to continue a health program.

Officials are expected to announce more details about the grant during a news conference on Thursday.

Arkansas Senate President Hopes Deal Soon On Tax Cuts

Arkansas Senate President Michael Lamoureux says he hopes to reach agreement by the end of the week with Gov. Mike Beebe and House leaders on a tax cut package.

Lamoureux told reporters Wednesday that legislative leaders are still discussing what would be in that tax cut agreement - but he hoped to have a deal soon. House Speaker Davy Carter has called on lawmakers to approve $150 million in tax cuts, while Lamoureux has said he thinks $100 million in cuts is more likely.

Hearing Set For Arkansas Prisoners Seeking Documents

A lawyer says a hearing has been scheduled in the case of six death row inmates who want the Arkansas Department of Correction to provide documents about lethal injection drugs.  

Attorney Jeff Rosenzweig said Wednesday that a hearing is scheduled for Monday morning in Pulaski County.  

Rosenzweig filed paperwork this week asking a court to order the correction department to release the records under the Freedom of Information Act.

The inmates are seeking documents containing information about the origin, history and quality of lethal injection drugs.

Restitution Hearing Set In Ex-Arkansas Lawmaker's Case

A restitution hearing has been scheduled in the case of a former state representative convicted of conspiracy to commit election fraud.  

A federal judge filed paperwork Wednesday saying that a hearing is set for April 15 in the case of former Rep. Hudson Hallum, his father and two campaign workers.

The court is expected to hear a claim for restitution from Kim Felker, who lost in a Democratic primary runoff to Hallum.

Pryor And Boozman Address Senate Immigration Reform And Gun Control Efforts

U.S. Senators Mark Pryor and John Boozman are carefully considering possible proposals for a comprehensive immigration reform package in the Senate.

Though there is new momentum for the reform effort, some Republican lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee are concerned that their colleagues may be moving too fast. They want more hearings on the proposal before the committee votes on it. 

Senator Pryor says the bipartisan bill could be filed in April or May.

Arkansas House OKs Nonpartisan Prosecutor Elections

The Arkansas House has approved a bill intended to remove party politics from the election of state  prosecutors.  

The lawmakers on Wednesday voted 63-24 to pass a bill making the state's 28 elected prosecuting attorneys nonpartisan positions. Candidates would no longer be listed on the ballot as Democrats or Republicans.

The bill calls for the state to collect prosecutor candidates' filing fees instead of political parties.

Large Sinkhole Puts Historic NW Arkansas Farm At Risk

A huge sinkhole appeared overnight in early March on a historic farm in Springtown in southwestern Benton County. No one was hurt, nor were any structures involved in the collapse. But as Jacqueline Froelich with station KUAF reports, the unique and ecologically sensitive site remains at risk.

Why Ouachita County Ranked The Least Healthy County In Arkansas

The Arkansas Department of Health says Benton County is ranked the healthiest county in the state.

The annual County Health Rankings takes into account 30 considerations, like dentists in the area, the percentage of adults who smoke and the accessibility of healthy food.

Dr. Joe Bates, the Deputy State Health Officer, said Ouachita County has the least healthy residents in the state.

Arkansas Panel Rejects Private School Tax Credit Bill

A proposal to offer a 100 percent state tax credit for donations to a scholarship fund for private schools has failed to clear an Arkansas Senate committee.

The Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee on Wednesday rejected the tax credit proposal on a voice vote, with the measure appearing to receive only three "yes" votes and two "no's" from the eight-member panel.
