Beebe Talks Stopping Big Hike in Teacher Insurance Premiums

Governor Mike Beebe

Governor Mike Beebe and some state lawmakers are hoping to avoid costly changes for Arkansas school teachers enrolled in state health plans. Insurance premiums are predicted to rise by up to 50% at the start of next year for those enrolled in the popular gold plan.

The rate hikes are unconnected to the implementation of the federal health care law. In his weekly radio address, Governor Beebe said this is not a new problem.

State Audit Committee Questions University Of Arkansas Officials About Finances

Officials with the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville are assuring state lawmakers that changes have been implemented to address monetary concerns. 

Chancellor David Gearhart says his campus is in sound financial shape, despite a state audit that cited the school's fundraising division for poor management that led to deficits.

Arkansas Arts Center 'Yarn-Bombed'

The entrance to the Arkansas Arts Center, as well as the Carrie Remmel Dickinson Fountain, and numerous trees and lampposts outside the museum has been 'yarn-bombed.' Arts Center staff and volunteers began the process Sep. 9 with strings of colorful yarn and hundreds of blankets.

Effort to Gather Information on Missing Persons Cases

An effort to address active missing persons cases is being held Saturday. The Attorney General’s office in conjunction with the FBI and State Police are inviting families of the missing to bring photographs, dental records, and participate in a DNA swab at the Clear Channel Metroplex in Little Rock.

Cindy Murphy, with the Attorney General’s office said Arkansas has over 400 missing people.

“The most recent figures I have from ACIC (Arkansas Crime Information Center) show a total of 424 missing persons and of those 209 are juveniles,” said Murphy.

Lawmakers To Discuss University of Arkansas Audit

A legislative panel is discussing an audit that cited the University of Arkansas for poor management and failure to follow policies that led to deficits in a division that handled fundraising and public relations for the school. 

The Legislative Joint Auditing Committee on Friday was set to review the audit of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville's Advancement Division. 

The audit was released earlier this week and said the division overspent its budget by $3.2 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2012.

Applications Being Accepted For Arkansas Storm Recovery

The application period is now open for counties, cities, and private nonprofit groups that have infrastructure damage from severe storms and flooding that hit part of Arkansas Aug. 8-12.

The Request for Public Assistance period will be open through Oct. 4 for eligible applicants in Benton, Boone, Carroll, Madison, Marion and Newton counties.

Applicants can call the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management recovery branch for forms and information.

Skull Found In Arkansas River In 2008 Is Identified

Fort Smith police say a skull found in the Arkansas River more than five years ago has been identified as that of a man missing since 2007.

Sgt. Daniel Grubbs said Thursday that DNA testing identified the skull as that of Salvador Serran Luevano. Luevano was reported missing shortly after the body of his 18-year-old wife - Blanca Cortes-Romero - was found floating in the river in August 2007.

The skull was found in March 2008 and was identified earlier this month after Luevano's relatives in Mexico were located and provided DNA samples for comparison.

Special Prosecutor To Review 107-Year-Old's Death

A special prosecutor has been ordered to review the shooting death of a 107-year-old Arkansas man who was killed in a standoff with police officers last weekend after State Police declined to investigate the case.

Jefferson County Judge Berlin Jones on Thursday ordered the state to appoint a special prosecutor to handle the case surrounding the death of Monroe Isadore in Pine Bluff on Saturday.

Jefferson County Prosecutor Kyle Hunter asked to recuse and that a special prosecutor be appointed after State Police said it wouldn't investigate the case.
