Verdi's Requiem

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will perform Verdi's Requiem Saturday, March 1 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 2 at 3 p.m. at Robinson Center Music Hall in Little Rock. The performance will include a 400 voice double choir and four vocal soloists. This At the Symphony focuses on Giuseppe Verdi's great work.

House Committee Approves Bill To Avoid Lt. Governor Special Election

An Arkansas House committee has approved a Senate bill aimed at keeping the lieutenant governor's office open until November after the last officeholder resigned over ethics violations.

House lawmakers cleared the way Wednesday for a Senate bill that would allow Gov. Mike Beebe to not call a special election for the state's second-in-command post within 10 months of the November election. Senators passed that bill unanimously last week.

The bill's sponsor, Republican Senate Majority Leader Eddie Joe Williams, says a special election would cost at least $1 million.

Hewlett-Packard Hiring 200 At Conway Facility

Hewlett-Packard has begun interviewing candidates for 200 positions it is working to fill at its Conway location.

HP is hiring people in software development and business analysis.

A job fair continues through Wednesday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Conway.

The Log Cabin Democrat reports that the positions are in the government health care sector.

HP account executive John Herzog says the company is the largest provider of Medicaid and Medicare processing and that it administers $140 billion in benefits annually.

Arkansas Man Facing Murder Charge Gets Six Years For Probation Violation

A man charged in the killing of a Hot Springs Village police dispatcher has been sentenced to six years in prison for violating the terms of his probation.

Kevin Duck received the maximum sentence for violating terms of his probation from an unrelated 2009 aggravated assault conviction.

Duck is now charged with first-degree murder for the 2011 death of his girlfriend, police dispatcher Dawna Natzke.

Officials recommended revoking Duck's probation after Duck's arrest last November on the murder charge.

5th House Vote On Private Option Delayed

The Arkansas House of Representatives is showing more signs of a continued stalemate over reauthorizing funds for the private option. On Tuesday measures to fund the Department of Human Services Division of Medical Services were not brought up for a vote, as House leadership indicated that the chamber was still two votes shy of reaching the 75 percent supermajority to reapprove the healthcare program for poor Arkansans.

Arkansas Flu Deaths Reach 52 So Far This Season

The Arkansas Health Department says 52 people have died from influenza so far this flu season.

Officials said Tuesday that there's about one week left in peak flu season and the toll could still rise. Last flu season, 61 people in Arkansas died from the respiratory virus.

Little Rock television station KTHV reports that most of people who developed fatal infections were adults between ages of 25 and 62.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta says the flu is classified as widespread in Arkansas.

Gas Prices Going Back Up In Arkansas

Just a few months after gas prices in Arkansas dropped below $3 a gallon, they’re back on the rise.

Regular unleaded gasoline reached a state average of $3.23 per gallon as of Tuesday, up six cents since last week.

“We’ve seen crude oil prices ratchet up in recent days and that’s driven up wholesale gasoline prices,” said Mike Right of Triple-A Auto Club, “and it’s not unusual to see that prices rise this time of year. In fact, last year at this time we were paying $3.64 a gallon.”

A Hub Where Students And STEM Experts Can Meet

Organizers are hopeful that students, teachers and professionals in science, technology, engineering and math can soon use the resources that the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub offers.

Tuesday marked the start of the renovations, with a ceremony attended by Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe, North Little Rock Mayor Joe Smith, local officials and students.

During the event, a wall was broken by a robot, formally beginning work to the center.
