Arkansas-Based Simmons First To Buy Liberty Bank

Pine Bluff-based Simmons First National Corporation has announced that it is buying Springfield, Missouri-based Liberty Bancshares in an all-stock transaction valued at more than $206 million.

The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter and is subject to approval by shareholders.

Through the end of March, Liberty had assets of $1.1 billion, loans of $811 million and deposits of $885 million.

Orthodontist Challenges Arkansas Law On Services

A Jonesboro orthodontist is suing the Arkansas Dental Examiners Board over a claim that barring him from offering stand-alone basic services like cleanings and X-rays is unconstitutional.

Lawyers for Dr. Benjamin Burris on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit in Little Rock that names the dental board and its members.

Arkansas Housing Prices in a National Context

Housing prices are on the rise in Arkansas and uncharacteristically are outpacing the national rate. A report released Tuesday from the Federal Housing Finance Agency shows Arkansas house prices rose 1.6 percent compared to the national rate of 1.4 percent.

Arkansas AG Asks Court To Uphold 12 Week Abortion Ban

Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel is asking a federal appeals court to uphold the state's 12-week abortion ban, arguing the prohibition furthers the state's interests in protecting pregnant women, unborn children and the medical profession.

McDaniel on Tuesday filed a brief with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals arguing that it should overturn a federal judge's ruling that the ban is unconstitutional.

McDaniel in April filed a notice with the court that he would appeal U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright's ruling.

High Court Sides With Police Over Fatal Arkansas Chase

The Supreme Court has sided with police officers who were sued over a high-speed chase that ended with the deaths of the fleeing driver and his passenger.

The court was unanimous in holding that the officers who fatally shot driver Donald Rickard did not violate the violate Rickard's constitutional rights.

The ruling Tuesday reversed a lower court decision that allowed the lawsuit to go forward against six West Memphis, Ark., police officers.

Ross, Hutchinson Agree To Televised Debate In Race For Governor

A week after securing their parties' nominations for Arkansas' top office, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Mike Ross and Republican Asa Hutchinson have agreed to a statewide televised debate.

Little Rock television station KATV announced Tuesday that Ross and Hutchinson agreed to participate in an hour-long debate on Oct. 7. The debate will be held at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and will air live statewide on KATV, in conjunction with KHBS/KHOG and KAIT.  It will also be live-streamed on station websites.

Search For Escaped Inmate In Arkansas Continues

Officials say they now believe an inmate who escaped from the Southwest Arkansas Community Correction Center in Texarkana borrowed a bicycle and rode it to Interstate 30.

Twenty-year-old Derek Still was part of a group of inmates being escorted to a recreation area Saturday when he ran from the group and escaped.

KLRT reports that police now believe Still was able to borrow a phone and bike.

Still was convicted in Van Buren County of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Annual Survey Of 75 Largest Private Arkansas Companies Shows Growth

Arkansas Business released its annual survey of the 75 largest private companies in the state in this week's issue, finding improving revenues and that many companies are making expensions.

Four new companies qualified to make the list: Summerwood Partners, Ritter & Co., Douglas Cos. and ABC Financial.

The 75 largest private companies in Arkansas generated total revenue — self-reported and estimated — of $31.15 billion in their most recent fiscal years, and the price of entry to the list was $88.8 million.
