An author whose extensive work helped build support that led to the release of the West Memphis Three has teamed up with one of the men to tell his story. It’s the second book on the case for Mara Leveritt whose previous book, Devil's Knot, was  recently made into a movie.

Abundance Of Ticks Reported In Arkansas

The University of Arkansas' Division of Agriculture says there is an abundance ticks this spring in Arkansas.

The statement comes on the heels of the death in neighboring Oklahoma of a man who had a virus spread through tick bites.

Extension entomologist Kelly Loftin says lone star ticks and American dog ticks are particularly prevalent. A Delaware, Oklahoma, man died from the Heartland virus - which is linked to the lone star tick.

Other ticks in Arkansas include the blacklegged tick, the winter tick, the Gulf Coast tick and the brown dog tick.

Mother: Son Missed Flight, Causing Airport Lockdown

The mother of an Arkansas man who caused a two-hour lockdown at Detroit Metropolitan Airport says he mistakenly re-entered a secure area after missing a flight this week to a basketball tryout.

Jennifer Smith of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, told The Associated Press on Saturday that 22-year-old Christian Smith's actions "were a complete misunderstanding."

Christian Smith was arrested Thursday night after exiting and going back into a secured side of a screening checkpoint at the airport in Romulus. The lockdown delayed flights at the McNamara Terminal.

Lawmakers Say VA Needs Reforms After Shinseki Exit

Members of Arkansas' congressional delegation say the focus should now shift to reforming the nation's health care network for veterans after Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned over systemic problems within the VA.

Shinseki's resignation was announced Friday, after calls had grown from lawmakers for his ouster following an inspector general's report revealing treatment delays. Hours before the announcement, Republican Sen. John Boozman called for his departure.

Data Breach Reported In Arkansas State University Department

The Arkansas Department of Human Services has told Arkansas State University about a data breach in ASU's College of Education and Behavioral Science's Department of Childhood Services.

ASU said Friday that the breach could expose personally identifiable information. Chief Information Officer Henry Torres says there has been unauthorized access to the data - but no reports of illegal use of the information.

New Regional Airport Opens In St. Francis County

Officials have marked the opening of the new Delta Regional Airport in eastern Arkansas.

State and local officials attending a gate-opening ceremony Thursday at the new facility in Colt. The new regional airport will eventually replace current airports in Wynne and Forrest City.

Arkansas Tech To Study Lake Maumelle Tributaries

Students and faculty at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville are to conduct an assessment of the biology of tributaries to Lake Maumelle, the water source for much of central Arkansas.

Assistant biology professor Rosemary Burk is to lead the group of science students in assessing changes to the water system. The collected data from the project announced Thursday will be provided to the utility Central ArkansasWater.

The study is being funded by $10,000 from Central Arkansas Water and the Arkansas Center for Energy, Natural Resources and Environmental Studies.

Georgia Pacific Announces $40 Million Expansion At Fort Smith Plant

Georgia-Pacific says it will invest $40 million in an expansion at its Fort Smith plant, which manufactures paper plates and other paper products.

Georgia-Pacific said Thursday that the new technology and equipment will increase the Dixie plant's current capacity for assorted sizes of paper plates. The plant now employs 350 workers, but the company says that number may grow once the expansion is complete next year.

The company operates 10 facilities throughout Arkansas with more than 2,400 workers in the state.
