Beebe Sends in National Guard to Help Stalled Motorists

Gov. Mike Beebe says state agencies are responding to motorists stuck on a pair of east Arkansas interstates for hours because of snow and ice.

Beebe says the National Guard and State Police are checking on motorists to ensure no one is having a medical emergency. Game and Fish workers are taking gasoline out to motorists who have run out.

Supreme Court Likely to Shield Police from Excessive Force in Death of Arkansans

The Supreme Court appears likely to rule for police officers in Arkansas who were involved in a car chase that ended with the deaths of the driver and his passenger.

No one on the court in arguments Tuesday seemed inclined to affirm an appeals court ruling allowing a civil lawsuit by the driver's daughter to proceed against six West Memphis, Ark., police officers. Police fatally shot driver Donald Rickard and passenger Kelly Allen in a chaotic scene on a Memphis street following a chase that began across the Mississippi River in Arkansas.

Cleanup Of Historic Majestic Hotel Debris Continues

A historic rendering of the Majestic Hotel in Hot Springs.

Hot Springs' city manager says the cleanup of the torn-down Majestic Hotel complex will happen as quickly as possible.

The historic, vacant hotel was destroyed in a fire last week and the city opted to tear down the building for the safety of the public. City Manager David Watkins says the city will not let the cleanup efforts "drag out" over several months.

The Sentinel-Record reports that the structure was torn down over a 12-hour period over the weekend.

Private Option on Ice: Speaker Says Votes Will Be There in the End

While the Arkansas House did convene Monday the chamber had some noticeable vacancies as several representatives did not come to the Capitol due to adverse weather conditions. Re-authorizing funds for the private option was not discussed in the legislature but Republican House Speaker Davy Carter told Roby Brock of Talk Business Arkansas he is still confident funding will be approved.

Well-Stocked Crews Working Arkansas Roads

Officials are urging motorists to remain cautious the next several days as ice is expected to linger while temperatures remain near freezing through Tuesday night.

Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Public Information Officer Randy Ort said roadways are likely to remain hazardous for the next few days.

“Travel is definitely not recommended. The longer anybody can delay their travels whether it be tomorrow (Tuesday) or the next day the better off they’ll be,” said Ort.

Filing Deadline for Arkansas Candidates

The one-week filing period for members of Arkansas' political parties has ended with 412 candidates entering elections this year. The Secretary of State's office says 19 people entered races before Monday's noon deadline. Candidates for non-partisan positions, such as judicial positions, have until 3 p.m. Monday to file paperwork with the state.

Weather Delays Jury Selection for Former Arkansas Treasurer Martha Shoffner

The trial of former Arkansas treasurer Martha Shoffner on 14 federal extortion and bribery charges has been delayed because potential jurors cannot travel to the courthouse safely. Jury selection was to begin Monday morning.

The jury pool includes residents from throughout eastern Arkansas, but a winter storm Sunday made many roads in the region impassible. The U.S. Attorney's office says a new starting time has not been set.
