Arkansas US Rep. Tom Cotton Weds Over Weekend

Republican Senate hopeful and U.S. Rep. Tom Cotton has married his girlfriend during a small ceremony over the weekend.

Cotton's Senate campaign said the freshman lawmaker married Anna Peckham, an attorney from Virginia, at a small wedding ceremony with family and close friends on Saturday. The two are currently on a honeymoon during the congressional recess, campaign spokesman David Ray said.

Ray declined to say where the wedding was held or where the couple was honeymooning.

In Race For Governor, Hutchinson raises $167K, Ross $140K

Republican gubernatorial hopeful Asa Hutchinson has outraised Democratic rival Mike Ross for the second month in a row but still faces a gap in money on hand in the race for Arkansas' top office.

Hutchinson reported on Monday raising $167,262 in February, compared to the $140,558 Ross raised in the same month.

Monday was the deadline for statewide candidates to file monthly campaign finance reports.

Little Rock Mayor Talks Obesity, Violence & Infrastructure In Annual Address

In his latest “State of the City” Address, Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola called for new efforts to end childhood obesity and violence among young African American males in the city. At the Centre at University Park Monday before several city leaders and community members, Stodola delivered his annual address, pointing out many of the city’s successes and several problem areas.

Actor Jeff Bridges Brings Attention to Child Hunger in Arkansas

The actor known for True Grit and The Big Lebowski stopped by a Little Rock elementary school Monday to have breakfast with students and to talk about child hunger in America. KUAR’s Jacob Kauffman covered the event featuring Academy Award-winner Jeff Bridges.

After breakfast, students at Stephens Elementary gathered to take part in games promoting healthy foods while Jeff Bridges and leaders from a number of Arkansas hunger relief organizations mingled with teachers and onlookers.

Arkansas Unemployment Down, Still Higher Than Nation

Figures released by the Arkansas Department of Workforce Services Monday show an increase in the number of workers who’ve found a job. The unemployment rate dropped a tenth of one percent to 7.3 percent in January, compared to December. It’s also two-tenths of a percent lower from the same time last year.

Dr. Michael Pakko with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock Institute for Economic Advancement says overall the numbers show positive trends in the state’s economy.

Arkansas Governor Names Chief Of Staff To UA Board

Gov. Mike Beebe has named his chief of staff and close friend Morril Harriman to the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees.

Beebe's office on Monday announced that Harriman would replace Sam Hilburn on the UA panel, an appointment that expires in March 2024.

Beebe's spokesman said Harriman will continue to serve as Beebe's chief of staff. Harriman, 63, has served as Beebe's chief since the governor took office in 2007.

Beebe called Harriman, with whom he served in the state Senate, his "best friend and most trusted ally" during his political career.

Governor Beebe Vetoes Tax Exemption For Drilling Sand

Gov. Mike Beebe has issued a line-item veto on a provision in a budget bill that exempts sales tax collection on the sand used in the drilling of oil and natural gas.

The governor made the line-item veto Monday in the budget bill for the Department of Finance and Administration's revenue services division.

In a letter to lawmakers, Beebe said the Legislature made a substantive change to state law without following the constitutional steps to do so during a fiscal session.

Coalition Closer To Plan For Homeless Campus

A coalition pushing a $3 million homeless campus in Fort Smith hopes to soon shore up funding and finalize a plan so renovation work can start later this year.

The Old Fort Homeless Coalition plans to purchase and renovate a 127,500-square-foot former furniture factory to start Riverview Hope Campus. The first phase of the project will renovate about 35,000 square feet of the factory at a cost of more than $1 million.
