UCA Receives $3 Million Gift To Expand And Renovate Science Center

The University of Central Arkansas says the local utility system has pledged $3 million for construction and renovation work at its Lewis Science Center.

The gift from Conway Corp. was announced Monday after it was approved previously by the city-owned utility's board of directors.

UCA President Tom Courtway called the gift one of the most significant developments in the school's history. The money will help build state-of-the-art labs and scientific facilities for students.

Governor-Elect Hutchinson: Higher Pay, Nationwide Search For Top Economic Development Post

Governor-elect Asa Hutchinson announced on Monday that he wants to raise the pay of the state’s chief economic developer to attract a high-caliber candidate in a nationwide search. Hutchinson also named two appointments to top state agency positions.

Speaking at a press conference at the Capitol, Hutchinson said he’d come to the conclusion compensation needed to be adjusted for the next director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission after consulting with industry leaders.

Arkansas Attorney General Reaches 'Cramming' Deal With T-Mobile

Arkansas' attorney general says the state will receive more than $230,000 after reaching a settlement involving "mobile cramming" allegations against mobile communications provider T-Mobile.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said Monday he and 50 other attorneys general along with the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission had reached the settlement with R-Mobile.

Arkansas Highway Commission Approves Project Near State Fairgrounds

The Arkansas State Highway Commission has approved a bid for improvements to a roadway in Pulaski County.

Officials at the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department said Monday that the purpose of the project is to replace a Highway 70 bridge that spans the Union Pacific Railroad, just west of the State Fairgrounds.

James Construction Group, LLC of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was awarded the contract totaling more than $10.6 million for the project.

Pulaski County School Superintendent Discusses Unitary Status

The Pulaski County Special School District is working towards achieving unitary status to be released from a 1989 desegregation lawsuit. On Thursday, a federal judge ruled the district had achieved the status in one area, special education.

District Superintendent Jerry Guess said in an interview with KUAR that he hopes to address five additional areas.

After more than three decades in elected office, outgoing Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe is already considered a fixture at the state Capitol. Now he's made it official. On Friday, Beebe unveiled his portrait which will hang in the Governor’s Conference Room.

"Alright, here we go," Beebe told the crowd before he and artist Ovita Goolsby pulled off a cloth covering the 42 by 50 inch oil painting. It shows the governor leaning back in a chair, left hand under his chin, with a slight smirk.

Arkansas Chamber Of Commerce Planning June Trip To Cuba

Before Wednesday’s presidential announcement opening up relations with Cuba, the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce was planning a networking trip to the communist island nation. Now, the excursion may take on a world of new meaning.

The state chamber, in partnership with Chamber Explorations, is offering members the chance to travel to Cuba from June 2-8, 2015.
