Billboard Honors Late Sheriff, Wildlife Officer

A county sheriff and a wildlife officer who died trying to rescue two women from a flooding creek are being honored as heroes on a billboard in Waldron.

Scott County Sheriff Cody Carpenter and Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Officer Joel Campora died May 31 while trying rescued Regina Shearn and Vivian Reimer from their home in Y City.

The two officers reached the home by boat - but they and the two women were killed when floodwaters from Mill Creek collapsed the women's house.

Child Among 3 Dead In Pike County Shooting

Arkansas State Police say a 9-year-old girl is among three people killed in a shooting near Delight in Pike County.

The ASP said in a news release Sunday that the three were found Saturday night after authorities received a 911 call reporting a shooting southwest of Delight. Troopers say 33-year-old Dana Hill and 54-year-old Julie Hartsfield were dead at the scene and 9-year-old Autumn Hartsfield was found wounded and later died at a Hot Springs hospital. The ASP says one man is being held for questioning about the shooting.

Arkansas AG Rejects Wording Of Gay Marriage Repeal

Arkansas' attorney general has rejected the wording of a proposal to repeal the state constitution's ban on gay marriage.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel on Friday rejected the language of a proposed constitutional amendment a group called Arkansans for Equality wants to place on the 2014 ballot.

The group must submit more than 78,000 signatures from registered voters to put the proposed amendment on the ballot.

The proposal would repeal the amendment voters approved in 2004 defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Arkansas Farmers Seeking Bounty Now Poised For Drought

Arkansas hay farmers once hopeful for three cuttings during 2013 are now worried about a developing drought.

Forecasters said Thursday that drought conditions are developing in portions of Arkansas.

For a time in the spring, conditions were such that some farmers believed they could make hay around Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.

University of Arkansas forage specialist John Jennings said Arkansas' weather pattern needs to change so broader areas of the state see rain.

VA Grants To Assist Arkansas Homeless Veterans

U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki has announced $1.3 million in federal grants to help homeless military veterans at two organizations in Arkansas.

The St. Francis House in Little Rock will receive about $600,000 while Seven Hills Homeless Center in Fayetteville is to receive the remainder of the grant as part of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.

The grants are among 319 awarded to agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
