Forecasters Call For Some Chance Of Hail And Damaging Winds Friday And Saturday


Some hail and damaging wind can be seen in the south east area of Arkansas Friday and Saturday. 

Meteorologist Julie Lesko, with the National Weather Service, said, “We do expect showers and thunderstorms much of Friday and especially during the overnight hours into Saturday morning.”

“Best chance of anything severe in Arkansas will be Saturday afternoon and that is just chance of maybe larger hail and gustier wind but that mainly south of Little Rock area and south east Arkansas,” said Lesko.

Peabody Hotel In Little Rock To Become Marriott Next Week

Peabody Hotel in Little Rock.

Officials say the Peabody Hotel in downtown Little Rock will switch over to the Marriott brand next week.

Little Rock Convention and Visitors Bureau CEO Gretchen Hall says the changeover will happen Wednesday.

Hall says the Peabody's signature ducks will take their last march in Little Rock within the next week.

In December, the Advertising and Promotion Commission signed an agreement to lease the Peabody to a Tennessee-based investment company, which settled on the Marriott brand.

Group Plans Meeting On Mayflower Oil Spill

A group that's critical of the oil spill in central Arkansas from an ExxonMobil pipeline is holding a meeting to mark the one-month anniversary of the accident. 

The group Arkansans Concerned about Oil Pipelines is to gather at 6 p.m. Monday at Pearce Park in Mayflower.

Thousands of gallons of oil spilled into a cove off Lake Conway and more than 20 homes had to be evacuated.

Environmental testing has shown no oil has leaked into Lake Conway, but hazardous fumes have been registered in the evacuated area, where the cleanup continues.

Hearing Set In Suit Over Arkansas 12-week Abortion Ban

A hearing is scheduled next month in a federal lawsuit challenging Arkansas' ban on most abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy. 

A court document filed Thursday shows that a hearing is set for May 17 in a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Reproductive Rights Center on behalf of two Arkansas doctors who perform abortions.

Law Restricting Paid Canvassers In Ballot Initiatives Awaits Lawsuit

Policy Advocates in Arkansas are planning to file a lawsuit challenging a new law which they claim restricts citizens from advancing ballot initiatives through a petition gathering process.

Act 1413 requires paid canvassers to register with the Secretary of State’s office and would criminalize canvassers who solicit fraudulent signatures.

Chelsea Clinton To Attend Youth Service Day

Chelsea Clinton is scheduled to attend a Global Youth Service Day event Friday in Little Rock.

The Clinton Presidential Center says the event will include more than 175 local high school students, as well as city officials.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that the activities include remarks from Mayor Mark Stodola, service projects and cooking and physical engagement sessions.

Suspect Dead After Morning Shootout With LRPD

One suspected car thief is dead after a shootout this morning with Little Rock Police near North University Avenue and H Street.

LRPD Spokeswoman Sergeant Cassandra Davis said police responded to a call at about 5:41 Thursday morning at 416 N. Pierce St. She said three individuals were reported breaking into cars.

High Court Addresses 2nd Juvenile Life Sentence

The Arkansas Supreme Court has ordered a new sentencing proceeding for a Little Rock juvenile who was convicted as an adult of capital murder and ordered to serve life in prison without parole.

The high court on Thursday addressed two such cases in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that found juvenile mandatory sentences of life without parole to be unconstitutional.

Lemuel Whiteside was 17 when he was arrested in the 2009 death of James London, who was killed in a robbery.

$130 Million Awarded To 92 Arkansas School Districts

More than $130 million has been awarded to 92 school districts for construction projects next year.

The projects were approved Wednesday by the Commission for Arkansas Public School Academic Facilities and Transportation.  

The largest single project was granted to the Bentonville School District, which received more than $15 million for the possible construction of a high school.
