Arkansas Highway Crews Prepare To Clear Slick Roads

Winter weather is expected to cause some problems for commuters as they try to navigate state roadways this weekend. Road crews are readying equipment so they will be prepared to treat icy highways in central Arkansas.

Danny Straessle works with the state highway department. He says a good mixture of sand and salt is on standby to aid de-ice efforts for area bridges and overpasses.

Icy, Slushy Highways Reported In Northern Arkansas

Arkansas highway officials are reporting icy and slushy roads in an area from Mena to Fort Smith to Dover to Hardy.

As a winter storm sliced into the state from the northwest, ice patches were reported on major highways north of Fort Smith to the Missouri line, then across northern Arkansas to Harrison and then down to Jasper and Dover.

Elsewhere in the region, the state highway department reported sleet falling.

Little Rock's Airport Reports Canceled Flights Due To Ice Storm

Officials at the Little Rock airport say airlines are beginning to cancel flights set for Thursday night and Friday morning as an ice storm moves into the region.

Spokesman Shane Carter of the Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport says six flights set for Thursday night have been canceled, along with seven set for Friday morning.

The 13 cancellations impact flights for American, Delta, Southwest and United.

Travelers are urged to check with the airlines before heading to the airport for their flight.

Water Officials Encouraging Residents to Prevent Frozen Pipes

Customers are being urged by Central Arkansas Water to take precautions to prevent frozen plumbing as temperatures plummet into the teens this weekend.

The agency recommends leaving a small stream of water running through faucets, which will reduce the chances of freezing during the evening and overnight hours.

According to CAW spokesman John Tynan, pipes broken as a result of freezing can cause water damage and additional difficulties for homeowners.

Stores Packed As People Stock Up In Advance Of The Ice Storm

In advance of the pending ice storm, stores in central Arkansas have been busy with people stocking up on groceries and other necessities to ride out the storm.

At a Kroger store on Colonel Glenn Road, customers were buying everything from dry goods and batteries, to the traditional staples like milk, eggs, and bread.

Keisha Elow said she had been to several stores Thursday, finding many were nearly cleaned out.

Arkansas Supreme Court Upholds Conviction In Death Of Family

The Arkansas Supreme Court says it won't set aside the conviction and life term given to a Randolph County man in the 1998 slayings of a family of four from Dalton.

Billy Dale Green said a judge should have stopped his 2012 trial at least four times, but justices said Thursday any errors were cured by instructions given to the jury.

Members of Green's family testified Green left his house one night in 1998 saying he had to "clean up a mess" created by his son, Chad Green.

Ice Storm Warning In Place For Arkansas

The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning for the Interstate 40 corridor and other areas in Arkansas.

The warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. Friday and stretches from the Oklahoma border in the west, the Texas border in the south to the Tennessee border in the east.

The warning includes Little Rock. Forecasters say rain will spread across the area Thursday morning and will change over to freezing rain by late afternoon.
