In Fiscal Legislative Session, Discussions On Private Option Go On

The Arkansas House of Representatives again delayed a fifth vote on funding Arkansas’s private option alternative to Medicaid expansion Wednesday. It came just as the state Department of Human Services new released figures showing that 127, 051 people have been deemed eligible to receive assistance under the healthcare program, with 105,561 already covered.

Third And Likely Final Round Of Layoffs Begins At Acxiom

A third, and likely final, wave of layoffs at Little Rock-based Acxiom Corp. began on Wednesday as the database marketer continued its push to realign its workforce to meet changing industry demands.

Acxiom indicated in November 2013 it would cut its overall labor force by March in an effort to save $20-$30 million annually.

Acxiom has been investing in new products and services geared towards more sophisticated consumer data collection and target marketing via the Internet as some of its traditional, core business silos have seen declines in revenue and profitability.

Mike Ross Makes Bid For Arkansas Governor Official

Former U.S. Rep. Mike Ross has made his bid for Arkansas governor official by filing paperwork to run for the state's top office.

Ross filed on Wednesday to run for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, vowing to follow the tradition of Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe.

Beebe was first elected governor as 2006 and is barred by term limits from seeking re-election.

Ross is the only announced Democratic candidate for governor. Former U.S. Rep. Asa Hutchinson and Little Rock businessman Curtis Coleman are seeking the Republican nomination.

Verdi's Requiem

The Arkansas Symphony Orchestra will perform Verdi's Requiem Saturday, March 1 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 2 at 3 p.m. at Robinson Center Music Hall in Little Rock. The performance will include a 400 voice double choir and four vocal soloists. This At the Symphony focuses on Giuseppe Verdi's great work.

House Committee Approves Bill To Avoid Lt. Governor Special Election

An Arkansas House committee has approved a Senate bill aimed at keeping the lieutenant governor's office open until November after the last officeholder resigned over ethics violations.

House lawmakers cleared the way Wednesday for a Senate bill that would allow Gov. Mike Beebe to not call a special election for the state's second-in-command post within 10 months of the November election. Senators passed that bill unanimously last week.

The bill's sponsor, Republican Senate Majority Leader Eddie Joe Williams, says a special election would cost at least $1 million.

Hewlett-Packard Hiring 200 At Conway Facility

Hewlett-Packard has begun interviewing candidates for 200 positions it is working to fill at its Conway location.

HP is hiring people in software development and business analysis.

A job fair continues through Wednesday at the Hilton Garden Inn in Conway.

The Log Cabin Democrat reports that the positions are in the government health care sector.

HP account executive John Herzog says the company is the largest provider of Medicaid and Medicare processing and that it administers $140 billion in benefits annually.

Arkansas Man Facing Murder Charge Gets Six Years For Probation Violation

A man charged in the killing of a Hot Springs Village police dispatcher has been sentenced to six years in prison for violating the terms of his probation.

Kevin Duck received the maximum sentence for violating terms of his probation from an unrelated 2009 aggravated assault conviction.

Duck is now charged with first-degree murder for the 2011 death of his girlfriend, police dispatcher Dawna Natzke.

Officials recommended revoking Duck's probation after Duck's arrest last November on the murder charge.

5th House Vote On Private Option Delayed

The Arkansas House of Representatives is showing more signs of a continued stalemate over reauthorizing funds for the private option. On Tuesday measures to fund the Department of Human Services Division of Medical Services were not brought up for a vote, as House leadership indicated that the chamber was still two votes shy of reaching the 75 percent supermajority to reapprove the healthcare program for poor Arkansans.
