Sentencing Planned For Ex-Pocahontas Judge

A former northeast Arkansas judge previously imprisoned for sending a live snake in the mail faces more time behind bars after he was convicted in a separate drug case.
 
Bob Sam Castleman is to be sentenced Friday in federal court in Little Rock. Prosecutors want the former Pocahontas district judge sentenced to at least 40 years in prison.

First Debate Between Pryor and Cotton Set For October

After months of debating about having debates both Republican Tom Cotton and Democrat Mark Pryor have agreed to a televised, live debate in Fayetteville October 14th. The two candidates for U.S. Senate will talk about domestic issues for one-hour from the University of Arkansas campus. There will be no discussion of foreign policy. That's something the Cotton campaign has expressed dissatisfaction with.

Oral Arguments Set For Next Month Over Challenge To Alcohol Proposal

The Arkansas Supreme Court has scheduled oral arguments next month in the lawsuit challenging a proposal to legalize alcohol sales in all 75 of the state's counties.

Justices on Thursday set oral arguments for Oct. 9 in the lawsuit filed by a group opposed to the proposed constitutional amendment.

Citizens for Local Rights asked the court to remove the proposal from the November ballot, arguing the state used the wrong deadline to accept petitions for the measure. It also argued that the ballot title is insufficient.

Arkansas' highest court has ordered the immediate removal of a judge from office in addition to his lifetime ban from the bench for disclosing confidential details about an adoption involving actress Charlize Theron's child and making off-color remarks in an online forum.

Arkansas High Court Won't Review Herb Rule's DWI Conviction

Arkansas' highest court says it won't review the driving while intoxicated conviction of a Little Rock lawyer who ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. House two years ago.

The Arkansas Supreme Court on Thursday denied Herb Rule's petition for review over his 2013 conviction by a Fayetteville District Court. Rule was arrested Aug. 9, 2012, while driving in Fayetteville.

Zone 5 Candidates For Little Rock School Board On The Issues

Early voting is underway in the Little Rock School District board election. Voters will decide on two of the board's seven seats by Tuesday, September 16. 

Joy Springer is challenging incumbent Norma Jean Johnson in the downtown area and Jim Ross is challenging incumbent Jody Carreiro in West Little Rock.

Legislature Weighs Human Trafficking Recommendations

A task force on human trafficking on Wednesday walked lawmakers through 19 recommendations that it believes would help Arkansas combat the problem. Proposals include changing the way Arkansas handles undocumented immigrants, particularly children.

Large Robotics Competition To Draw Students To Little Rock Next Year

About 3,000 high school students from around the region will take part in a massive robotics competition next year in Little Rock. Details of the event, designed to make key subjects more engaging for young people, were announced Wednesday at the Capitol.

In the governor’s conference room, a robot named Nighthawk sped around, tossing a large ball toward Gov. Mike Beebe and Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola. They joined with officials involved in the Arkansas Rock City Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, to be held March 4-7, 2015 at Barton Coliseum.

Pryor Points To Equal Pay Vote As Difference With Cotton On Women

The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday on a procedural motion to advance the Paycheck Fairness Act. Most Democrats, including incumbent Senator Mark Pryor are highlighting the vote in advance of November elections as something that distinguishes themselves from Republicans.

Pryor argued the bill would help women receive equal pay.

Library Director, Arts Community Advocate Jeff Baskin Dies

The long-time director of North Little Rock’s Laman Public Library has died. Jeff Baskin, 67, was diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer earlier this year. 

A funeral service will be held tomorrow, September 11.
