State Economic Dev. Director Says Big River Steel Isn't Without Risk

An Arkansas House Committee passed a proposal Wednesday to offer $125 million to a steel company to locate in the state.

The House Agriculture and Economic Development Commission advanced on a voice vote a bill that would give the state the authority to use state money for economic development to provide infrastructure, training and tax credits for Big River Steel, which would be located in Osceola.

State Economic Development Director Grant Tennille told lawmakers the plan isn’t without risk, but whether it fails or not, would be an economic benefit to the state.

Senator Dismang Says Lawmakers Will Be Asking Questions About His Bill To Expand Coverage

Lawmakers are meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss bill to expand private health insurance coverage for people with income 138 % below the Federal Property Level.

Senator Jonathan Dismang, (Rep) from Beebe is the sponsor for one bill to expand coverage.

"There's a lot of discussion that individuals want to have about the actuarial study that was released last week.  So my understanding is we're trying to simplified those spread sheets so it's more understandable and the folks from DHS will be on hand to help answer questions,” said Dismang.

FAA Sets Flight Restrictions Over Arkansas Oil Spill Site

The Federal Aviation Administration has placed flight restrictions on the airspace over the Mayflower oil spill site.

According to FAA.gov, no pilots are to operate any aircraft over the area.

The restrictions are effective "until further notice," according to the website.

An FAA spokesman says the restrictions apply to aircraft flying at 1,000 feet or less, like news media helicopters and local aircraft.

Bryant Police Officer Involved In Fatal Shooting

Arkansas State Police say a Bryant police officer shot and killed a man while investigating a burglary alarm.

State police say two officers responded to the burglary call late Tuesday at Fred's Store on Arkansas 5 in Bryant. Authorities say gunfire erupted between an officer and a man who was in a fenced area along the west side of the building.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. State police say the officer was injured in the shooting and taken to a Little Rock hospital, where he was treated and released.

Arkansas Groups May Benefit From USDA Health Care Grants

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is taking applications for $3 million worth of health care projects for communities of up to 50,000 people in Arkansas and seven other states in the Delta region.

Undersecretary for Rural Development Dallas Tonsager says the Delta Health Care Services Grant Program covers 252 counties and parishes. The best proposals will get grants of $50,000 and up.

The money can be used for health care cooperatives, services, education and job training. Applications are due May 28.

Feds Send Corrective Order To Exxon After Arkansas Oil Leak

Oil spilling into Arkansas neighborhood.

Federal pipeline safety officials have issued a corrective action order to ExxonMobil after one of the company's pipelines ruptured last week in central Arkansas. 

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued the order Tuesday after ExxonMobil's Pegasus pipeline ruptured Friday in the small city of Mayflower, about 25 miles northwest of Little Rock.

State Investigators To Visit Site Of Oil Pipeline Break

On Wednesday, state investigators are to visit the site of last week’s rupture of an oil pipeline in Mayflower.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel says his office has also told ExxonMobil, which owns the Pegasus Pipeline, to preserve all documents and information related to the spill and ongoing cleanup efforts.
