Groups Try To Improve Arkansas Nursing Homes Through Evaluation And Training

Officials with the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care are touting efforts underway to improve nursing homes in the state.

Through the nonprofit’s Arkansas Innovative Performance Program, teams of experts are providing on-site assistance to Medicaid-qualified nursing homes and additional training for employees certain facilities.

Letter: Arkansas Ethics Panel Investigating Darr

The Arkansas Ethics Commission says it's looking into a complaint that Lt. Gov. Mark Darr spent hundreds of dollars from his campaign at restaurants, gas stations and retail stores and illegally classified them as fundraising expenses.

The commission said in a letter to lawyer and blogger Matt Campbell that an investigation had begun into his complaint against the Republican lieutenant governor over his campaign finance reports.

The letter, dated Friday, says the panel is looking into whether Darr violated several ethics laws.

Bridge Repairs Mean Lane Closure In Little Rock

Arkansas highway officials say drivers should expect a continued lane closure on Highway 10 in Little Rock.

The State Highway and Transportation Department says bridge repairs on the roadway will require the westbound outside lane of Cantrell Road to be closed on the railroad bridge located just west of Dillard's corporate headquarters in Little Rock.

The closures will be in place Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day, weather permitting.

Little Rock Zoo Mourns 62-Year-Old Elephant's Loss

The Little Rock Zoo is mourning the death of a 62-year-old elephant named Jewell.

The zoo says in a statement that Jewell was euthanized Sunday after she was found lying on her side on the ground and struggling to get up. The elephant was unable to lift herself up and zoo staff worked quickly to lift Jewell to her feet using a large crane and harness.

Arkansas SWAT Officers Kill Man, 107, In Standoff

Police in the southeast Arkansas city of Pine Bluff say a 107-year-old man is dead after SWAT officers shot back at him during a standoff at a home.

Pine Bluff Lt. David Price tells KATV that police officers called to the home Saturday were told Monroe Isadore had pointed a weapon at two people there.

Officers had the threatened pair leave the home and approached a bedroom. Police say Isadore shot through the door at officers but missed hitting them.

Former HOF Employee Accepts Plea Deal In Fraud Case

Credit Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame

A former official at the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame has pleaded guilty to a federal fraud charge after auditors found a $118,300 shortfall.

Jennifer W. Smith pleaded guilty to a single count of access device fraud.

Sentencing guidelines suggest she'll face about a year in prison. A plea agreement says Smith must make $70,000 in restitution in 45 days.

Prosecutors said the 47-year-old abused a Hall of Fame credit card for a 5-1/2 year period ending in November 2012. Smith was fired last December.

Arkansas Sheriff Reverses Course, Says He Will Retire

An Arkansas sheriff who pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and public intoxication has reversed course once again and now says he will retire.

Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington said in a letter dated Friday that he will retire effective Oct. 1.

Pennington said the same thing on Aug. 30, but he later changed his mind and said he wanted to finish his term and run for re-election.

Pennington didn't immediately respond to a phone message on Friday, and his latest letter doesn't explain why he changed his mind again.

Arkansas Girl Recovering From Rare Infection Can Swim

A 12-year-old Arkansas girl who has been recovering from a rare and often-fatal brain infection went swimming for the first time since she got sick.

Kali Hardig went swimming Friday at a pool at Arkansas Children's Hospital. That marks a milestone because health officials believe Kali became sick after a trip to an Arkansas water park this summer.

The brain-eating amoeba that caused Kali's infection is often found in warm freshwater. That amoeba, called Naegleria fowleri, typically enters the body through the nose when people are swimming or diving.
