Ark. House Passes Bill For Trial Court Assistants

  The Arkansas House has approved a proposal to create new court charges to resolve a funding shortfall for the state's trial court assistants. 

Lawmakers voted 86-4 on Tuesday to pass the measure, with two lawmakers voting present.

The bill would impose a new $25 fine for violating the mandatory seat belt law or failing to present proof of insurance during a traffic stop. It would also raise money by charging a $50 fee to expunge misdemeanor charges and tightening some loopholes in the court fee structure.

Ark. Senate Votes To Restrict Body Art Procedures

  The Arkansas Senate has voted to ban body art procedures that involve inserting objects under the skin or purposely scarring people.

By a 26-4 vote, the Senate on Tuesday approved a measure that bans body art procedures known as dermal implanting and scarification. The measure now heads to the House for a vote.

The legislation defines dermal implanting as the insertion of an object under the skin for decoration or ornamentation.

Arkansas lawmakers have approved a $220,000 contract with a consultant to review Medicaid and other public assistance programs, despite objections from Democrats over the way the agreement was handled.

Hot Dog Mike Returns to Central Arkansas

Hot Dog Mike is returning to Little Rock.

Just a month after his departure from Little Rock to his home state of New Jersey , Michael Juiliano, also known as Hot Dog Mike, is returning to the capital city.

The popular hot dog cart vendor earned the admiration of locals not just with his food but also with his support of charities that help the poor and homeless.

Hot Dog Mike plans to develop a multi-cart operation. He is also developing his own brand of Hot Dog Mike hot dogs and products that will be available at local grocers, with a portion of the proceeds going back into the community.

Arkansas Literary Festival to Feature Award-Winning Authors

Tickets for a reception and book reading by two well-known authors will be on sale starting Wednesday.

Academy Award-winning authors Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, known for their adaptation of Brokeback Mountain, will be in Little Rock from May 2-3.

“It’s always terrific when we can bring amazing authors to Little Rock. So, hopefully the audience will enjoy the authors as much as we enjoyed bringing them to Little Rock,” said Brad Mooy, with the Arkansas Literary Festival.

Lack Of Tax Refunds Pushes Arkansas Revenues Up

A lack of individual income tax refunds last month helped push Arkansas' revenues above predictions and last year's numbers, state financial officials said Monday, but warned they expected those gains to level off later this year.

The Department of Finance and Administration said that the state's net available revenues in February totaled $210.1 million. That's $20 million above the same month last year and $15.7 million above forecast. The state's revenues for the year to date are $99.2 million above forecast.

Sequestration Could Close Control Towers In Arkansas

Several regional airports around Arkansas could lose funding to operate their control towers because of the budget sequestration in Washington. 

Monday the U.S. Department of Transportation is to announce which ones will be cut.

One of those is in Texarkana, Arkansas.  Sabrina McCormick with Texarkana station KTXK reports that could also jeopardize its passenger service.

The sole airline serving the airport, American Eagle, could decide to end service because there is a higher risk when serving non-towered airports.

Union Rescue Mission's New Facility To House Over 170 Men

The Union Rescue Mission will hold a grand opening of its newly built Men’s Facility Saturday at Confederate Boulevard in Little Rock.

The organization that helps the homeless, victims of domestic violence and people with addiction problems.

Leaders of the local chapter say the opening comes as the community faces an increase in the number of people needing assistance.

Executive Director William Tollett says they exceeded a $3 million dollar fundraising project which was used to build the Men’s Facility and renovate the Women’s Facility at S. Park Street.
