Arkansas Democrats Plan Impeachment if Lt. Gov. Mark Darr Doesn't Resign

Calls for Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Darr to resign are turning to plans for impeachment. House Minority Leader Greg Leding, D-Fayetteville, told Arkansas News Bureau Friday steps would be taken to "at least try" to move for impeachment if Darr is still in office when the fiscal session begins February 10th.

Renovating Rail in Southeast Arkansas

Governor Beebe's Radio Address: Child Hunger in Arkansas

Governor Mike Beebe (D) used his weekly radio address to call attention to child hunger in the state. Data from the US Department of Agriculture shows Arkansas as one of the top ten states facing food insecurity.

Governor Beebe said 24 percent of children in the state face uncertainty having enough to eat on a regular basis but the state has made progress.

“Through our summer feeding program this year, we fed 64 percent more people than we did in 2012. A total of 3.7 million meals were provided at more than 750 sites statewide,” said Beebe.

Amnesty Period for Misdemeaner Warrants, Overdue Fines in Little Rock

Little Rock District Criminal Court is running a temporary amnesty program for people with overdue fines and court costs, as well as failure to appear warrants. Natalie Short, a Senior Probation Officer, said the program is for non-violent offenders.

“These are misdemeanor cases that have already been adjudicated and already been fined out, or given some type of sentence. People have either fallen behind or not made payments as agreed,” said Short. She said the city believes this policy encourages people to come forward.

ASU Announces New Football Coach

Officials with Arkansas State University announced Thursday their fifth head football coach in five years. Blake Anderson most recently served as offensive coordinator for North Carolina where his team earned school records in offensive categories. At a press conference Anderson stressed his aggressive style.

Second Largest Payout Ever Could Be Big for Arkansas Lottery Commission Revenue

The Arkansas Lottery is taking part in the second largest Mega Millions jackpot ever in the nation, involving over 40 states. Tuesday's drawing is for $636 million.

State Lottery Director Bishop Woosley said big jackpots usually meana  spike in revenue so this jackpot could help the Lottery Commission catch up to their revenue goals.

Beebe Touts Healthcare Reform in Radio Address

Governor Mike Beebe touted the construction of several new medical projects throughout the state as evidence of good healthcare policy. In particular Beebe addressed Arkansas' adaption of the Affordable Care Act that uses Medicaid money to buy private health insurance for the working poor, instead of expanding Medicaid coverage. Governor Beebe said it will help hospitals.

Finding: Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Mark Darr Misused $12,000 of Taxpayer Money

A meeting of the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee on Thursday found Republican Lieutenant Governor Mark Darr misused over $12,000 of tax payer money. The findings show Darr improperly spent over $9,000 on travel expenses and over $2,000 from his state credit card.

Prosecutors Say No Criminal Activity in UA Deficit Problems

Prosecutors in Washington County said they have found no evidence of criminal activity. Their finding comes in the wake of an investigation by the Arkansas Division of Legislative Audit that found four issues of concern.

The Division of Legislative Audit previously found a duplicate expense payment, an improper deposit, a treasurer that partially “obscured deficits,” and contradictory statements made under oath between former UA spokesman John Diamond and Chancellor David Gearhart pertaining to the shredding of documents.
