3 GOP Candidates File For Arkansas State Senate Race

Three Republicans have filed to run for their party's nomination for a northeast Arkansas Senate seat vacated by a Democratic lawmaker who resigned over ethics violations.

John Cooper, Chad Niell and Dan Sullivan filed paperwork Wednesday to run for the state Senate seat that had been held by Democratic Sen. Paul Bookout. Bookout resigned last month after the state Ethics Commission said he spent thousands from his campaign on clothing, home theater equipment and other personal items.

Filing for the special election began Tuesday and ends Friday at noon. Two Democrats have already filed for Bookout's seat.

The primary will be held on Oct. 8, with a runoff on Nov. 12 if necessary. The special election will be held Jan.14.
