A lawyer for a death row inmate convicted in the 1997 slaying of a security guard at a North Little Rock mall says the Arkansas Supreme Court should send the prisoner's case back to a lower court for a hearing.
One of Andrew Engram's lawyers, Julie Vandiver, told the state's highest court Thursday that the justices should send his case back to a lower court for a hearing on whether he had good cause to file a petition after a deadline to do so had passed.
Engram was convicted of killing Laurie White. Engram's lawyers say he has an intellectual disability.
The state says Engram's case should be dismissed.
The Arkansas Supreme Court usually hears oral arguments in Little Rock but justices heard arguments Thursday in Conway.
