Arkansas Governor Heads To Cuba On Trade Mission

Sep 27, 2015

Gov. Asa Hutchinson says he wants Arkansas to be in a position to take advantage if the United States' embargo with Cuba is lifted - as he heads a trade mission to the country this week.

Hutchinson is traveling Sunday to Cuba and will be the first governor to visit since the former Cold War foes reopened embassies in their respective countries in July. Hutchinson told The Associated Press last week it's clear the embargo will be lessened and he wants Arkansas to be prepared.

Hutchinson supported the embargo in Congress and later enforced it as undersecretary at the federal Department of Homeland Security. While he's not calling for an outright end to the embargo, he says he supports gradually removing some of the travel and financing restrictions under it.
