The Metroplan Board of Directors on Wednesday selected Conway Mayor Tab Townsell as the agency’s next executive director. He will replace current director Jim McKenzie, who announced he would retire at the end of this year.

McKenzie has served in the role for the last 28 years. Metroplan is a federally-mandated transportation policy authority for Central Arkansas.

Townsell has been a board member since 1999, when he was first elected mayor of Conway. He is not seeking reelection this year. His salary has not been announced but the agency has said the new director would be paid between $90,000 and $165,800.

Townsell was one of two final candidates, after the agency received applications from more than 50 people. The other finalist was Andrew Gast-Bray, a transportation consultant in Mooresville, Indiana.
