EPA Orders Clean Harbors To Pay $581k Penalty

May 14, 2014

The Environmental Protection Agency says Clean Harbors El Dorado L.L.C. has agreed to pay a more than $581,000 penalty for improperly identifying and disposing of hazardous waste; improper storage of hazardous waste; and failure to comply with air emissions standards at its plant in El Dorado.

The EPA says the violations were discovered during inspections.

Clean Harbors Vice President Phil Retallick says the sale of the product - brine - had been previously approved by Arkansas environmental officials. He says the company decided it was in its best interest to settle the case. Retallick says there was no pollution or contamination released into the environment and that there was no impact on humans or the environment.

The facility incinerates both hazardous and non-hazardous wastes.
