The former president of the Arkansas Senate has broken his silence about receiving $120,000 in consulting fees from a group largely funded by lobbyists and their clients while he led the Senate.

Michael Lamoureux, now chief of staff for Gov. Asa Hutchinson, said Thursday his actions were ethical and legal.

In an emailed statement from the governor's spokesman, Lamoureux said he recruited candidates and educated them on issues, and recruited volunteers and handled legal issues for the political nonprofit Arkansas Faith and Freedom Coalition.

Tax records show Lamoureux received $120,000 of the $141,000 raised by the group in 2013. Records show the group was mostly funded by lobbyists and their clients.

Lamoureux says he also worked for the group in early 2014. He didn't say how much he was paid.
