Fort Smith Woman Faces Embezzlement Sentence
Prosecutors say a former Fort Smith bank official who pleaded guilty to embezzlement should face more than three years in prison when she is sentenced next month.
Mary Kay Newman pleaded guilty last March to embezzlement and misapplication of funds by a bank employee.
She faces sentencing Aug. 15. The U.S. Attorney's office wants a sentence of 41 to 51 months.
The Southwest Times Record reports Newman is free pending sentencing. The 45-year-old had worked at First National Bank in Fort Smith for more than 20 years.
A bank customer who needed money for medical bills said that a power of attorney was necessary for Newman to pay doctors, but that Newman didn't have authority to use other money. Auditors say nearly all the money was recovered.
