The Arkansas Department of Health says an outbreak of mumps has been confirmed in northwest Arkansas.
The health department said Wednesday that there are two confirmed cases and 18 suspected cases of mumps in the Springdale area, which is the largest cluster since 2010.
The outbreak now affects the Springdale School District. State Epidemiologist Dr. Dirk Haselow says more cases are expected, and he urged residents to stay up-to-date on their vaccines.
Mumps is a viral infection that causes swelling in the salivary glands and cheeks. Those with the illness may also have headaches, fatigue, muscle aches and low-grade fevers.
