Jefferson County Deputy Arrested For False Police Report

A Jefferson County sheriff's deputy has been arrested and fired for allegedly filing a false police report.

The sheriff's office said Tuesday that Deputy Jeremiah Stephens surrendered Monday night after charges were filed.

Sheriff's Maj. Lafayette Woods Jr. says Stephens filed a report in April that his apartment had been ransacked and his .40 caliber Glock service weapon was among the items stolen.

Woods says information was later uncovered that disputes Stephens' account of the events. The nature of that information was not released and Woods says the weapon has not been recovered and is listed as stolen.

Woods says Stephens had been on paid leave until being fired Tuesday. Woods did not know if Stephens has an attorney.

Stephens is due in court on Oct. 5.
