KUAR Expands Investigative Journalism, Local Content

We're excited about programming changes coming to KUAR 89.1 this fall! If you like ground-breaking storytelling and expanded local content, we think you'll be enthusiastic about these changes, too.

Great things are happening at UALR Public Radio so keep reading, but first let's pay tribute to an old favorite.

Car Talk: Share Your Memories!

Many of our listeners would agree Car Talk has had an amazing run! After the death of Tom Magliozzi – one of public radio's most popular personalities – nearly two years ago, KUAR decided to continue to air The Best of Car Talk. The program features repackaged versions of old favorites with Tom and his brother Ray, the duo known as "Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers."

Nothing will replace fond memories of Tom and Ray and we look forward to paying them tribute on Saturday, September 17. We invite you to be part of the tribute! E-mail cartalk@kuar.org with your memories so we can share them. Let's celebrate the humor, passion, expertise and just plain silliness the Magliozzi brothers brought to our lives.

The final The Best Car Talk show will air on KUAR 89.1 on September 24.

What happens after that? We will expand Weekend Edition Saturday, which will air from 7 until 10 a.m. This expansion will allow KUAR to bring you more locally-produced news content on Saturday mornings. You'll also get more of Scott Simon wrapping up the week's news and offering a mix of analysis and features bringing his humorous, sophisticated and often moving perspectives to the show.

Arts & Letters and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

In an effort to bring you expanded local content, Arts & Letters and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow will now have monthly one-hour time slots.

Arts & Letters will air the third Friday of every month from 7-8 p.m. starting Sept. 16, with either an hour-long program or back-to-back half-hour programs. The show, hosted by associate professor J. Bradley Minnick of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, highlights the arts and humanities. The program recently won a first place award from Public Radio News Directors Incorporated in the long documentary category for the show “Sundays with T.J.”

For updates and expanded content, follow the show on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/artsandlettersradio

Meanwhile, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow – the program that offers perspectives on our world through the eyes of three generations – will now air an hour-long program on the first Friday of every month from 7-8 p.m. starting October 7. The show is hosted and produced by Phil Mariage.

Topics covered have included parenting, advertising, obesity, war and addiction.

Mariage has interviewed a myriad of guests, some of whom have left us but live on through the program: historian John Hope Franklin, politician and historian George McGovern, Marian McPartland of NPR's Piano Jazz and Elizabeth WarnockFernea, an influential writer, filmmaker and anthropologist.

Exploring TEDx

Don't miss a special local program, Exploring TEDx, that features Arkansas speakers examining issues in architecture, the genetic diversity of our food, and overcoming depression through poetry and the arts. The special will air Friday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m.

You may be familiar with TED Talks, perhaps through tuning into the TED Radio Hour on KUAR. TED Talks showcase speakers presenting ideas that aim to challenge our beliefs and perspectives in various disciplines. Throughout the country, cities host their own, independent TED Talks, known as TEDx events.

Leading up to the second annual TEDx event in Little Rock on September 30, we reflect on last year's conference by featuring portions of some of the talks accompanied by recent follow-up interviews with the speakers. The program is hosted by Lisa Carver of Little Rock.

Guests include poet and author Chris James, architect Reese Rowland, and conservationist and gardening enthusiast P. Allen Smith.

Reveal

Reveal is a nationally-distributed radio program featuring innovative and compelling investigative reports from The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR). Beginning Thursday, September 1, it will air 8-9 p.m. weekly.

With a team of award-winning journalists, CIR strives to hold the powerful accountable and reveal government fraud, human rights violations, environmental degradation and threats to public safety. Their ground-breaking storytelling shines a light on injustice and protects the most vulnerable in our society.

CIR's work has been recognized for its excellence including recent accolades from the Emmy Awards, a George Foster Peabody Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award for investigative reporting. You can read more about the program at revealnews.org.
