North Arkansas County Sued Over Nativity Scene

Kevin Pieper/The Baxter Bulletin

A disclaimer posted with a Nativity scene at an Arkansas courthouse didn't protect Baxter County officials from a federal lawsuit.

The American Humanist Association and a Baxter County resident filed a lawsuit Tuesday saying the display is an improper endorsement of religion and asking that the scene be taken down.

They complain that the chief administrator of the county has refused to put up a "Happy Solstice" banner at a resident's request.

Baxter County Judge Mickey Pendergrass told the Baxter Bulletin newspaper he had not seen the lawsuit. He addressed previous complaints by saying he didn't want "hundreds" of display proposed for the courthouse lawn.

The newspaper said it couldn't reach the American Humanist Society in Washington for comment because its offices were closed for the holidays.
