5 Hurt When Tornado Touches Down In Arkansas

Thunderstorms sweeping through Arkansas flipped an 18-wheeler and damaged homes in the north-central portion of the state. 

The National Weather Service said four people were reported injured Wednesday evening after a tornado hit Van Buren County. Tornado damage was reported at Botkinburg, Mount Olive, and Scotland, with a tractor-trailer flipped over near Botkinburg.

John Robinson of the National Weather Service said 30 homes were damaged in Van Buren County and that five people were injured. Three were treated at a hospital and released.

Survey Crews To Seek Twister Damage In Arkansas

Severe Weather Alert

Survey crews from the National Weather Service will fan out across Arkansas to look for signs of tornado damage. 

A number of severe thunderstorms hit the state Wednesday in Arkansas's first severe-weather outbreak of the spring.

Forecasters say it appeared some twisters touched down in north-central Arkansas; some injuries were reported.

Among the areas to be surveyed Thursday are near Botkinburg and Scotland in Van Buren County, and also Horseshoe Bend, Mount Olive and west of Mountain View.

Thunderstorms And Heavy Rain Are Expected Tomorrow Night

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected beginning late Tuesday night through Thursday, as the National Weather Service predicts a line of storms moving through the state. 

Meteorologist Julie Lesko said eastern parts of Arkansas will see stronger and more damaging winds.

Heavy Rain Predicted For Arkansas Midweek

The National Weather Service says heavy rain is expected this week with a chance for severe storms as a front moves through the state. 

Forecasters say 1 to 3 inches of rain is possible Tuesday and Wednesday, with up to 4 inches in areas of southeast Arkansas.

System Brings Snow, Sleet to Arkansas

As a wintry storm system continues to move across the state today residents of Central Arkansas can look out for some icy precipitation early this afternoon.

A recent cold front which passed through the state this week is combining with rain to cause a wintry mix to pour down on much of the state. “So we have a forecast of 1 to 3 [inches] and higher amounts across northeast Arkansas, mainly from Harrison to Newport and places like Jonesboro and Corning and places up there. They could see more than four inches,” says Meteorologist Emily Nipper of the National Weather Service.

Winter Storm Warning Issued For NE Arkansas

A winter storm warning is in place for northeastern Arkansas, where a springtime storm system is predicted to bring 3 to 5 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service issued the warning for Clay, Craighead, Greene, Lawrence, Poinsett and Randolph counties. It's in place from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday.

Forecasters say the snow is expected in the area in the late afternoon Thursday and will continue until midnight.

Other areas in north Arkansas could see 1 to 3 inches of snow on Friday. In central Arkansas, rain and occasional sleet are predicted.

Friday Is The Warmest Day Of 2013 So Far

The National Weather Service says Friday was the warmest day of the year so far in central Arkansas.

The temperature reached into the 80s.

Weather officials say in previous years at this time of March, the temperature was around 63.

Winter Weather Advisory For Counties In North And Central Arkansas

While central Arkansas has seen some sleet and snowflakes today, there has been no accumulation because temperatures have remained above freezing.

But with another round of precipitation expected, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for counties in north and central Arkansas for late Wednesday through Thursday afternoon.

Senior Forecaster John Lewis says little to no accumulation is expected in the Little Rock area.

Little Rock Board Of Directors Voting To Hire Contractor For Winter Storm Cleanup

20,000 tons of debris remains scattered across Little Rock, left behind by the Christmas Day storm. The Little Rock Board of Directors is choosing one of 18 contractor bids tonight, in order to get the fragments cleaned up.

Assistant Public Works Director, Ronny Loe says FEMA will reimburse the city for the money spent to hire and compensate a contractor.

"The original FEMA estimate was around 22,000 tons, and as of the beginning of this week we have picked up around 6,000" says Loe.

Hundreds Of Thousands Still Without Power After Christmas Snow

About 130,000 Entergy Arkansas customers still are without power in Central Arkansas with the majority of those in the Little Rock area.

Including Entergy and other power networks in the state, a total of about 200,000 electricity customers still don't have power in the state.
