10 Colorado Counties To Vote On Secession

A battle between urban and rural values is underway in Colorado, and a showdown will take place tomorrow at the ballot box.

Ten counties in Colorado’s eastern plains want voters to weigh in on whether they should have the right to secede and become the country’s 51st state. And in a county in the northwest corner of the state, some residents want out of Colorado and into Wyoming.

Advocates for the move say recent changes in the state, including gun ownership restrictions, energy policies increasing costs to farmers and allowing the use of medical marijuana, hurt those in rural areas and fundamentally change the nature of rural life.

Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson speaks to Ryan Warner, who has been covering the issue for Colorado Public Radio.
