Lawmakers backing a number of pro-gun measures at the Arkansas Capitol are hopeful that Republican domination of state government will give their bills a better chance of passing.
Arkansas Republicans have filed bills that would, among other things, lower the concealed carry permitting age for military personnel and address "stand your ground" and "guns on campus" proposals.
Republicans control the Legislature and the governor has ties to the National Rifle Association. Gun rights advocates suffered a setback when the House Education Committee rejected a bill to force public universities to allow concealed carry holders to bring their weapons onto campus, but the bill could come up again.
The sponsor of the "stand your ground" idea says he wants to prevent citizens from civil lawsuits and costly court fees.
