Arts Scene: Peter And The Starcatcher And Mendelssohn's First Symphony

Peter and the Starcatcher

Part 1:

Arkansas Rep's fourth show of its 2015-2016 season was a bit upstaged by the headlines announcing its director Bob Hupp's resignation, but that news will be two weeks old when Peter and the Starcatcher opens on January 22. Another departure from the usual for Peter and the Starcatcher, is that this is a shared production with Theatre Squared, the northwest Arkansas repertory theater in Fayetteville, which held the production slot for its Christmas show which closed January 3.

Two of the cast - director Mark Shanahan and actor Steve Pacek - joined me a few days ago and I was curious to hear what adjustments were needed, what positions, as well as the cast, such as music director, moved with the cast.

Part 2:

Mendelssohn's First Symphony is one of three works receiving premier performances in Arkansas in the next Intimate Neighborhood Concert from the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. The other two Arkansas premiers are Suite for Strings by Michael Fine and In C by Terry Riley. Phillip Mann is my guest, who has gathered them together for this, the second INC, and the second verse: "Something old" (The first was "Something new").

In its fourth year, the INC series has expanded from three to four concerts (this is the second in this season).
