Crematorium Next To Elementary School Raises Objections

Arkansas officials have again tabled a proposal for a cemetery and crematorium next to an elementary school in Pope County. The Russellville Courier reports the Arkansas State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors postponed the discussions at its regular meeting Thursday morning.

Some city residents have opposed locating the crematorium next to Center Valley Elementary school. They're worried about mercury emissions from cremated dental fillings. The president of Humphrey Funeral Services wants to build a cemetery and 3,000-saure foot administrative building on a 35-acres site. He previously said he would remove the fillings prior to cremation.

The vote was previously tabled at a July hearing in Russellville. The board is scheduled to vote on the permit in November in Little Rock.
