Authorities say an armed man who was shot by guards this week outside of an Air Force base in Arkansas has died.

Little Rock FBI office spokeswoman Deb Green says 43-year-old Larry McElroy, of Jacksonville, died late Tuesday at an area hospital.

Investigators say McElroy drove his SUV over a curb outside the Little Rock Air Force Base's main gate on Monday and struck a sign. They say guards shot him after he exited the vehicle holding a rifle.

It's unclear why McElroy went to the base, located about 15 miles northeast of its namesake city.

The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office says McElroy in January told a deputy he found spy devices from the base in his home. The state medical examiner will determine McElroy's cause of death.
