Governor Hutchinson's Son Arrested On Felony Drug Charge

William Asa Hutchinson III
Washington County Sheriff's Office

The son of Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson is facing felony drug charges after being arrested in Baldwin County, Alabama.

Asa William Hutchinson III, 40, was searched Saturday night as he attempted to enter the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores. Police said Hutchinson was attempting to conceal something in his rear waistband, so they confronted him and asked if he had any contraband.

According to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office, Hutchinson voluntarily removed from his waistband a flask containing an unknown alcohol. After searching Hutchinson, officers also found a baggie containing two capsules of Molly and four ecstasy tablets.

Hutchinson was placed under arrest and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. He was released Sunday morning on $5,000 bond.

When asked about the arrest during a press conference Monday, Gov. Hutchinson said

Well, those are the days that it's tough to be a parent and it's tough to be a son. And I think every parent and every son would identify and understand that problem. And my son's an adult and he will have to address this just like he has had to address other things in the past.

The governor's son was previously arrested in January 2016 on DWI and careless driving charges after his car hit a guardrail on Interstate 49 in Fayetteville. He has pleaded not guilty in that case.
