Lawsuit Against Big River Steel Mill Heads To Federal Court

Opponents of a new steel mill under construction in eastern Arkansas will try to persuade a judge not to dismiss its lawsuit to stop the plant. Nucor Steel has sued to stop construction of the $1.3 billion Big River Steel mill in northeast Arkansas. Big River Steel fired back with a motion to dismiss Nucor's lawsuit. A federal judge in Little Rock will hold a dismissal hearing Friday. The Big River Steel mill near Osceola broke ground in September. It's Arkansas' first "superproject" under a 2004 amendment allowing the state to borrow money to help lure major employers. The mill has promised to employ more than 500 people. It's just 20 miles away from Nucor's existing mill in Blytheville.
