School Official: Hiding From Gunman A "Failed Policy"

The superintendent of an Arkansas school district that wanted to let teachers and janitors carry 9mm handguns on campus says the district will find other ways to protect its 2,500 students.

The Clarksville district trained 20 employees as security guards but Arkansas' attorney general said the workers cannot carry weapons at school.

Superintendent David Hopkins on Friday decried what he called the "failed policy of lock the door and hide."

After the deaths last year of 20 students at a Connecticut school, several states explored ways to protect pupils.

A handful of Arkansas districts sought to train some employees as security guards.

After The Associated Press profiled the program this week, a state legislator asked Attorney General Dustin McDaniel whether the practice was legal. McDaniel said it likely wasn't.
