Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Cotton says he and his wife, Anna, are expecting their first child.

Cotton, who is challenging Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor in one of the closest-watched Senate races in the country, made the announcement Thursday. The congressman says the baby boy is due in April.

The couple was married in March in a small wedding ceremony.

Cotton says they feel "very blessed" to be starting a family together. Cotton was elected in 2012 to represent south Arkansas' 4th Congressional District and announced last year that he'd be challenging Pryor for the Senate seat. The lengthy and costly campaign has drawn national attention, with Republicans viewing the seat as key to winning a majority in the U.S. Senate.
