State Says 75 Arkansas School Districts Want Snow Day Waivers

The Arkansas Department of Education says 75 school districts and charter schools have requested waivers to reduce the number of snow days that must be made up this year.

Department spokeswoman Kimberly Friedman says the Arkansas Board of Education will consider the requests during its March 20-21 meeting.

Schools must have class for 178 days each school year, but the state can waive that number on a case-by-case basis. A district must miss more than 10 days to be eligible for a waiver.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that 14 districts requesting waivers have had 20 or more snow days this school year.

The West Fork School District says it plans to make up its 18 snow days, with the last day of the year planned for June 6.

The Jasper School District has three campuses in the same district with a different number of snow days per campus.
